Hot on the heels of my discovery that I am likely a very tiny member of a very tiny minority of people in this country because I find the massive number of God-Science sites utterly lunatic (referenced in the post on Young Earth Activists) and honestly quite irrelevant to reality, I tripped over this in the NYT, Activists Fight Green Projects, Seeing U.N. Plot. Hey, every body needs to believe in something, right? It’s what holds us together in our common humanity (?).
The protests date to 1992 when the United Nations passed a sweeping, but nonbinding, 100-plus-page resolution called Agenda 21 that was designed to encourage nations to use fewer resources and conserve open land by steering development to already dense areas. They have gained momentum in the past two years because of the emergence of the Tea Party movement, harnessing its suspicion about government power and belief that man-made global warming is a hoax…
Tom DeWeese, the founder of the American Policy Center, a Warrenton, Va.-based foundation that advocates limited government, says he has been a leader in the opposition to Agenda 21 since 1992. Until a few years ago, he had few followers beyond a handful of farmers and ranchers in rural areas. Now, he is a regular speaker at Tea Party events.
At a Board of Supervisors meeting in Roanoke in late January, Cher McCoy, a Tea Party member from nearby Lexington, Va., generated sustained applause when she warned: “They get you hooked, and then Agenda 21 takes over. Your rights are stripped one by one.”
Echoing other protesters, Ms. McCoy identified smart meters, devices being installed by utility companies to collect information on energy use, as part of the conspiracy. “The real job of smart meters is to spy on you and control you — when you can and cannot use electrical appliances,” she said.
Well, there you have it. Smart meters, not your frickin’ laptop/cell phone/gps tracker/online bill-pay/drones, are how they’re gonna get you! I hear Gingrich loves these guys.
Anyway, I’d started to entertain an idea today that because people are so infinitely stupid and self-centered and “individualistic” these days (believe me it’s “these days” because we have been trained to be so) that the governments of the G-Pick a Number have decided that the best thing to do to counter Global Climate Catastrophe is just to return to repressive tyrannies and limit all electricity use simply by means of force and law and find a way to call it God’s Great Will. I would go along, I suppose, in order to save the planet for those myriad species that do not deserve to be wiped from the face of it due to human arrogance and ignorance.
As an aside…I’d lay good money (please appreciate my witty figuration) that the religious giving and merchandizing industry is on a par or exceeds that of pornography. Who’s got the stats?
God speed, Big Brother. Bowmb chicka wowow…
