The Value of Employment in Education

urban schoolHere are some things I noticed today looking at the HR postings for a local school corp.

  1. High School Guard (one really ought to train in law enforcement): $14.70 per hour, 8 hours.
  2. Preventionist: GED.  Aids in literacy education: $8.70 per hour, 6.5 hours
  3. Locker Room Aide: No clue what this is: $8.70 per hour, 7 hours
  4. Bus Driver: $11.67 per hour, 5 hours
  5. Substitute Health Aide (i.e., sub-nurse): $9.28 per hour

One can now determine the “value” of education by the “cash” esteem of those who instruct, those who monitor, those who transport, and those who “bounce.”

Disappointing to say the least

Also, in some respects, the children worked with by an “over-qualified” preventionist, are gaining a private tutor for $8.70 per hour.  What does that locker room aide bring to the table?

Now if one is highly educated AND highly qualified AND respected for one’s capabilities, what does public education offer for you?

Extremely disturbing. Absurd in my opinion. The literacy aid paid the same as a locker room aide?
These values seem arbitrary to me.

Welcome to my employment opportunities in the public schools.

Yes. I am clearly valued and the teachers know that I am another teacher and not an aide. They are ecstatic to have the quality assistance…so much so that they want to use me as extensively and intensively as they can.

I am playing for the future…

We must all understand that this is a move to reduce labor costs. It’s a move to “test” the environment to see if the schools “succeed” with under-qualified help in order to continue to “pay down” the “teaching” element of education.
